About Peter Nikolaus Heikenwälder

What in fact is a picture? What does it need to have and what doesn’t it need at all? With his paintings, Peter Nikolaus Heikenwälder goes on a quest for answers to these questions. It sometimes takes several years until a picture has found its final form, until all the problems of form, space, and color have been solved to the point where they can pass the test of the artist’s critical eye. Against a dark background, endless translucent spaces open up, crisscrossed by floating forms, at times with luminous colors. Where is the foreground and the background? How is space defined? How is it generated?

Peter Nikolaus Heikenwälder, born in 1972, studied at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) from 1997 to 2003. He moved to Hamburg after graduating in 2003 and has lived and worked in the city since then. He taught painting at the University of Flensburg from 2007 to 2008. He work has been shown at numerous exhibitions and at international art fairs.
